Watch: Two New Webinars on Hepatitis B and Migration

Earlier this month, the Health+Law Research Partnership hosted two webinars on hepatitis B and migration, featuring researchers from our team, members of our partner organisations and experts in hepatitis B. The first webinar introduces Australia’s migration system and provides an overview of the complexities it may pose for people living with hepatitis B who seek to migrate. The second webinar presents a wide-ranging panel discussion among key professionals and sector leaders across lived experience, community, health care, health policy, law and migration.

Further details about each webinar with links to access the recordings are included below.

An Introduction to Hepatitis B and Migration in Australia

Migrating to Australia is almost always a complex process, especially for individuals living with chronic health conditions like hepatitis B. Understanding the structure of this process, including the challenges it poses, is crucial for supporting better migration outcomes and experience for people.

This webinar, hosted by Health+Law in early October, delved into the challenges faced by people living with hepatitis B in the context of migration. The session featured insights from two leading experts in this intersection, Principal Solicitor Vikas Parwani from the HIV/AIDS Legal Centre (HALC), who provides legal services to people living with HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B; and Associate Professor Anthea Vogl from the Faculty of Law at UTS, who is an expert on the legal regulation of borders, refugees and non-citizens, and a chief investigator in the Health+Law partnership.

Vikas and Anthea presented on key aspects of the Australia’s migration system and process, highlighting the vital role played by lawyers, migration agents, clinicians and other support networks, including healthcare and community organisations. They also reviewed recent updates to health-related requirements including the ‘significant cost threshold’ – highlighting that change in this area of migration law and policy have the potential to positively impact those affected by hepatitis B seeking to migrate to Australia.

Anthea and Vikas’s conversation is a valuable resource for professionals across the migration, legal, community and health sectors, as well as for migrants and visitors living with or affected by hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B and Migration to Australia: Navigating and Supporting Medical, Legal, and Other Processes

In October, Health+Law presented a follow-up webinar, which aimed to identify and address the complexities and challenges of the migration process for people living with hepatitis B. It focused on how healthcare practitioners, community workers and lawyers – among others – can support their patients and clients through the migration process.

The panel was chaired by Benjamin Riley, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at ASHM Health and a partner investigator with Health+Law, and included a diverse panel of experts and sector leaders with experience at the intersection of hepatitis B and migration:
