An Introduction to HIV and Migration Law in Australia: Watch the Webinar

For several years, we have known that the migration process is one of the major legal issues causing harm to people living with HIV and Hepatitis B in Australia. But what exactly does that migration process look like, and what can clinicians do to support better migration outcomes for their patients?

In 2021, in work leading to the Health+Law project, ASHM, HALC and UTS Law together ran a webinar to answer these questions and provide an overview of migration law in Australia, specifically in terms of how it affects PLHIV. Hundreds of people have watched the video presentation since its publication online, and as it concerns a central aspect of our work at Health+Law, we want to share it again now.

ASHM Policy and Public Affairs Manager Ben Riley hosts two of Australia’s top experts in migration law – HALC Principal Solicitor Alexandra Stratigos and and UTS Law’s Dr Anthea Vogl – who explain in detail the migration process for PLHIV, provide specific advice for clinicians supporting patients with HIV applying for temporary or permanent visas, and discuss inequities in Australia’s migration system.
